I think the story that I'm telling in that song is one of having this all-consuming love … and then, when it's gone, you still have to live every day and you still have to work and do your job and you still have to be a person and you still have to exist. I think that's the central imagery on that album, and it kind of divides side A and side B, if you consider side A to be more like when everybody's around and B to be when everyone's gone. “Automate Me” closes with the image of loneliness after a party clears out. And then, when it's gone, you're left with ruins." It does feel like you can only distract yourself for so long.
